Godley, IL

Godley is a village that straddles Grundy and Will counties in northeastern Illinois. It first developed as a coal-mining community and incorporated in 1888 after residents gathered at a schoolhouse to vote on village organization. The village's boundary still crosses the county line, so local government and school arrangements follow two county systems. The 2020 census counted 566 residents, and nearby Braidwood adds another visible reminder of the region's energy and industrial history.

Godley Public Water District handles the village's water connection. Students on the Will County side are in Reed-Custer Community Unit School District 255U; students in Grundy County fall within Braceville School District 75 and Gardner-South Wilmington Township High School District. That split is part of everyday geography, not a line on an old map. Godley remains a small village with a coal-town beginning, a two-county footprint, and roads tying its homes to the larger communities of the Illinois River and Chicago's southwest side for local families today.
