Golden, IL

Golden is an Adams County village whose railroad history began under another name. The first tracks reached the area in the 1850s, and the Toledo, Wabash and Western and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy lines eventually crossed here. Lots for Keokuk Junction were laid out in 1866, the village incorporated in 1867, and residents adopted the name Golden in 1881. The old junction still makes sense when you look at the roads and rail corridors around the village. The crossing also made the village a meeting place for freight and farm trade.

Golden’s early population included German immigrants who traveled through Bremerhaven, New Orleans, and Quincy before making the last leg by wagon or horse. That migration helped shape the farms and families around the village. The Prairie Mills Windmill, known locally as the Windmills of Golden, gives the place a visible landmark and a reason to pause in the middle of Adams County. The Golden Historical Society keeps the railroad, immigrant, and milling stories connected to the village’s present-day sense of place.
