Goldsmith, IN

Goldsmith is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Jefferson Township, Tipton County, Indiana, about six miles west of Tipton. The settlement was surveyed in 1876 as Green Station, then took the name Goldsmith after another Indiana post office already used the first name. The new name honored a contractor associated with the Lafayette, Muncie and Bloomington Railroad, which ran through the village. A post office followed in 1876, and the first Jefferson Township school had already opened in the community in 1842.

Goldsmith's older map includes the railroad line, a Methodist Episcopal church organized in 1881, and the school history that gave the village a larger regional role in the early twentieth century. In 1914 its high school was described as one of the state's most modern, and the village hosted an old settlers' meeting that drew thousands of early Indiana settlers. Today Goldsmith remains a small Tipton County place surrounded by the agricultural roads of central Indiana. Tipton lies to the east, while the old rail alignment and the community's school and church history give the crossroads a clear local shape.
