Goodwell, OK

Goodwell is a Texas County town whose modern identity grew from a railroad switch and a college campus. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific line established the switch in 1901, and the town later became home to Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The school began as Pan-Handle Agricultural Institute, changed names as its mission broadened, and took its university name in 1974. That history keeps Goodwell tied to both the rail-era settlement and the educational life of the Oklahoma Panhandle.

The No Man's Land Museum sits in town in partnership with the university, holding the regional story of the old Public Land Strip, pioneer settlement, and Panhandle communities. Goodwell Public Schools serves local students, while nearby Guymon handles many larger services and errands. The landscape is broad and dry, with long views and roads stretching across Texas County. For a small town, Goodwell has an unusually clear set of reference points: the campus, the museum, the railroad history, and the name that recalls a well dug in a place once known as No Man's Land.
