About Gould

Gould began as Gibson, then took the name of postmaster John A. Gould when its post office opened in 1909. The railroad arrived the following year, and the town incorporated in 1917 at the intersection of U.S. 62 and State Highway 5. Cotton gins, grain elevators, lumberyards, and a hotel made Gould an agricultural trade center, while its school, opened in 1909, lasted until 1990. The community remains in Harmon County’s farming-and-ranching country, where the highway junction and old business pattern still give a compact town its working geography.
