About Gouldtown

Gouldtown is a Cumberland County census-designated place in Fairfield Township, with New Jersey Route 49 running through the community toward Bridgeton and Millville. Its local story is carried most clearly by Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church, whose congregation reaches back to 1818 and whose present building dates to 1860. The church is listed on the National Register and still stands in Gouldtown's streetscape and history. The community appears on the northwest side of Cumberland County, with Bridgeton close by and farm roads stretching out around it. Gouldtown is a small South Jersey place whose name, church, and Black settlement history have stayed together on the map.
