Graford, TX

Graford sits in Palo Pinto County on the road between Graham and Weatherford, and its name gives away that connection: it blends the two larger towns. The community began near Flat Rock Crossing on Big Keechi Creek, where an 1854 homestead became a home, a travel stop, and then a store. A post office followed in 1894, and Graford grew as people moved through the county by road and rail. Today, State Highway 254 and Farm Road 206 keep the city tied to the wider North Texas landscape, while Possum Kingdom Lake lies about twelve miles to the west.

Graford’s school identity is easy to spot in the Jackrabbits, the mascot of Graford High School and Graford Independent School District. That gives the city a familiar small-town center even as the surrounding country opens into ranchland, creek bottoms, and lake country. The place name, the old crossing, and the modern highways all tell the same story: Graford grew by connecting people who were already moving between county seats, ranches, and the water. It still works as a base for seeing the Palo Pinto County side of Possum Kingdom country.
