Grand Mound, IA

Grand Mound sits in Clinton County along an old Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad line, with a town name that began as a clerical mistake. The railroad reached the site in 1858, the town was platted in 1866, and the city incorporated in 1884. Grand Mound was named for nearby Sand Mound; the word 'Grand' reportedly stuck after a recording error, giving the town a name that sounds like a boast and began as paperwork. The rail line set the first pattern: station, stores, farm shipments, and a town grid in the middle of eastern Iowa.

The railroad story is still on display. A replica depot moved into town in 2019 serves as a rail-history museum, while the Grand Mound Community Historical Museum occupies the old 1892 fire station with hand-pulled fire equipment and local artifacts. Central DeWitt Community School District serves the area, and the city park, ballpark, Community Center, and Fourth of July celebration keep the civic calendar moving. Grand Mound is a town built by tracks and agriculture that now keeps its history in a depot, a firehouse, and a shared community room.
