Grand Ridge, IL

Grand Ridge is a LaSalle County village on Illinois Route 23 between Ottawa and Streator, surrounded by some of the state’s richest farmland. The railroad shaped the place early: the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy’s Fox River Division reached town in 1870, and a station followed. Village history says railroad engineers noticed this was the highest point between Streator and Aurora and changed the name from Livonia to Grand Ridge. The village incorporated in 1891.

The rail line and the road still give Grand Ridge its orientation, but the village’s older story also runs through grain, lumber, and small shops. Judge John Porter later operated grain elevators here, and the town’s position between river valleys and farm country made it a practical shipping point. Grand Ridge Grade School carries the Mohawk mascot and serves as one of the local daily landmarks. The 2020 census counted 515 residents. Grand Ridge is the kind of place where a railroad grade, a raised horizon, and a long strip of Illinois Route 23 tell you most of what you need to know.
