Grand Rivers, KY

Grand Rivers is a Livingston County city on an isthmus between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, near the place where the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers once met. Its name arrived after several earlier post-office names: Otisville in 1879, Bernard in 1882, and Nickells in 1883. The settlement incorporated as Grand Rivers in 1890, during a short-lived attempt to develop local iron deposits. A Kentucky historical marker on Commerce Avenue recalls the Grand Rivers furnace, built in 1890-91 and operated intermittently until 1921.

Water still organizes the town, though the modern map is built around lakes, roads, and a compact downtown. City Hall and the water-and-sewer office sit at 155 West Cumberland Avenue, and the Grand Rivers Community Center's main hall seats about 200. Green Turtle Bay and Lighthouse Landing put marinas on the two sides of town, while downtown restaurants, shops, and the Badgett Playhouse keep activity close to the old street grid. Grand Rivers also licenses golf carts for city-street use, a small detail that tells you how the town connects its city blocks to lake traffic. The old river narrows became a lake isthmus, and the town still works from that pinch point.
