Granite Falls, MN

Granite Falls is the Yellow Medicine County seat on the Minnesota River, where U.S. 212 meets Minnesota 23 and 67. The 2020 census counted 2,737 residents. The city got its name from granite deposits along the river, and its post office dates to 1870. Andrew John Volstead, the longtime congressman behind national Prohibition legislation, lived here; his 1906 home is now a National Historic Landmark. That gives the town a surprisingly large historical footprint for a river community its size. Most day-to-day orientation runs through the river corridor and the county-seat center.

The historic Roebling footbridge crosses the Minnesota, and the riverwalk, fishing access, and kayak launches keep the water close to ordinary weekends. The Volstead House Museum and Julian A. Weaver House add local history, while Western Fest and other downtown events put the streets to work through the year.
