Granite, OK

Granite is a Greer County town at the base of Headquarters Mountain, where Oklahoma 6 and 9 meet south of the center. The post office opened in 1889, the town was platted in 1900, and the railroad arrived that same year. Granite's early economy drew from the surrounding farms and ranches, the local granite quarries, and monument makers such as Willis Granite Products. Those layers remain legible in the town's name and in the stonework associated with the area.

A mile east, the Oklahoma State Reformatory is a major institution on the local map, with the facility's history reaching back to its opening in 1910. Lake Altus lies nearby on the North Fork Red River, adding a water-and-recreation destination to a town otherwise oriented around highways, stone, and wide-open Greer County country. Highway 6 points north toward Elk City and south toward Altus; Highway 9 runs east toward Hobart and west toward Mangum. Granite feels less like a single downtown story than a meeting point for a mountain, a state facility, a quarry tradition, and the regional roads that connect them.
