Grantsville, MD

Grantsville grew where the Casselman River crossing, Braddock’s Road, and the National Road kept meeting. The area began with Amish and Mennonite settlers and a place called Little Crossings; the stone Casselman River Bridge, built in 1813, later carried the National Road and was the largest single-span bridge of its day. Daniel Grant gave the town its name, and the old road still runs through town as Main Street and Alternate U.S. 40. Grantsville is a Garrett County town that reads like a road trip through early America: ford, inn, bridge, stage road, and modern highway in one short stretch.
