Grapeland, TX

Grapeland is a Houston County city where the name makes sense before you know the history: the 1872 railroad builders cut through wild grapevines, and the first settlement was called Grapevine until the post office required a different name. The Houston and Great Northern line turned the spot into a townsite and a crossroads between Crockett and Palestine, and cotton growers soon had a depot, stores, gins, and mills close at hand. U.S. 287 and Farm Road 227 still carry that crossroads idea through town.

The crop changed over time. Peanuts took over much of the old cotton role, and the Peanut Festival—first the Goober Carnival—has been a fall tradition since 1945. Houston County Lake on Little Elkhart Creek adds fishing and outdoor time to the local map, while Grapeland ISD and the Sandies keep school identity visible. Grapeland is often called the Queen City of the Sand Flats, but the more useful picture is a small East Texas town that grew from rails and cotton, found a new agricultural signature in peanuts, and kept its annual celebration tied to the harvest.
