Gray, ME

Gray is a Cumberland County CDP of 887 residents in the 2020 census, the built-up center within the much larger Town of Gray. State Routes 4, 26, 100, 115, and 202 and the Maine Turnpike's Exit 63 put the CDP in the road network between Portland and Lewiston. The surrounding town reaches into the Little Sebago and Crystal Lake area, while Gray Public Library and the town office give the village center its everyday civic addresses. The library's programs, town services, and regional facilities give the CDP a civic life that is small in scale but connected to a much larger town.

The town around Gray also has an unusually regional role. Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife operates a headquarters, fish hatchery, and wildlife park in Gray, and NOAA's Gray-Portland Weather Forecast Office issues forecasts for western Maine and New Hampshire. MSAD 15 and Gray-New Gloucester High tie the village to the wider school area. Gray is a small Maine center sitting inside a larger lakes-and-highways town, with state wildlife and weather work close to the village streets.
