Grays Prairie, TX

Grays Prairie is a Kaufman County village nine miles south of Kaufman and nine miles northwest of Kemp, near Farm Roads 1388 and 148. The community formed in the late 1840s and early 1850s around Peede and took its present name from the Gray family, whose settler Nicholas H. Gray held a 640-acre tract at the headwaters of Bois d'Arc Creek. Farming shaped the place from the start; it served as a center for nearby farm families, with a store and two churches still noted in the 1970s.

Grays Prairie was incorporated and counted 325 residents in 2020. The village is served by Scurry-Rosser Independent School District, tying its small boundary to a wider rural school system. Kaufman, the county seat, is close enough to be the main civic reference point, while Kemp lies in the opposite direction. Grays Prairie's map is straightforward: farm roads, open country, Bois d'Arc Creek headwaters, and a village whose history is rooted in farm connections.
