Graysville, TN

Graysville is a Rhea County town along Roaring Creek between Walden Ridge and Blackoak Ridge, just north of the Hamilton County line. William Gray, an early settler and the town’s first postmaster, gave the community its name in 1875. The railroad arrived in the 1880s, opening the way for coal extraction, coke production, and ironmaking. Dayton and the wider Rhea County road network connect Graysville to the Tennessee River valley and the larger Chattanooga region.

The old industrial story still shapes the town’s hills and creek routes, even after the coal-and-iron operation closed during the Great Depression. U.S. 27 runs along the eastern side, while State Route 303 passes through the center and links neighborhoods with county roads. Today Graysville is known through its town services, churches, homes, schools, and access to Roaring Creek, Cranmore Cove, and the surrounding ridges. It is an East Tennessee town where railroad industry, creek geography, and mountain roads remain layered in the same small valley.
