About Great Falls

Great Falls sits on the Catawba River in southeastern Chester County, about fourteen miles southwest of Lancaster. The river’s rocky drop drew industry, and the town grew from a cluster of textile mills into a place whose old mill ruins, downtown blocks, and water access still sit close together. The Republic Cotton Mill ruins remain the clearest reminder of that industrial chapter, while the river now brings kayakers, hikers, and people looking for rapids and trails.

Great Falls was founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1902. The Great Falls Depot, Great Falls Downtown Historic District, and Republic Theater preserve different pieces of the town’s working map: rail travel, mill-era commerce, and an entertainment building that once served local audiences. The town library belongs to the Chester County Library System, adding a present-day civic thread. Great Falls is a place where the same river first powered factories and now shapes outdoor recreation, with historic streets and whitewater sharing the same view.
