Rock Hill, SC

Rock Hill got its name in 1852 when railroad workers hit a rocky knoll while laying tracks between Charlotte and Columbia. Today, it is York County’s largest city, sitting about twenty-five miles south of downtown Charlotte. The historic center, known as Old Town, also holds an important piece of civil rights history. In 1961, nine Friendship College students staged a sit-in at the downtown McCrory’s lunch counter and chose thirty days in jail over paying fines. Their "Jail, No Bail" strategy helped energize the national movement, and the former McCrory’s building remains a landmark on Main Street today.

A lot of Rock Hill's recent growth centers on the corridor between Old Town and the university. Former textile mills have found new life as Knowledge Park, anchored by The Thread, a massive brick-and-timber redevelopment filled with local offices, shops, and restaurants. Down the street, the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center hosts regional tournaments throughout the year. A block off Main Street, Fountain Park serves as a neighborhood gathering spot, hosting Saturday farmers markets, Food Truck Fridays, and outdoor movie nights on the lawn from spring through fall.

Winthrop University gives the area a classic college-town feel, with tree-lined brick paths and a regular calendar of concerts, gallery exhibits, and guest lectures open to the community. Most residents rely on cars for regional travel, and Interstate 77 offers a direct commute into Uptown Charlotte. For getting around town without a car, York County Access provides an on-demand transit service that lets riders reserve door-to-door trips anywhere in the county.

Outdoor recreation is centered along the Catawba River, where the Riverwalk neighborhood combines riverfront dining with miles of paved trails. The Catawba River Trail winds along the water, linking up with kayak launches and the regional Carolina Thread Trail network. Rock Hill has also earned a reputation as a major cycling hub, boasting an Olympic-caliber outdoor velodrome, a championship BMX track, and dedicated mountain bike trails. On warm weekends, locals head to the riverfront to paddle the water, run the greenway, or grab dinner on an open patio.
