Rock Hill, SC

Rock Hill owes both its name and its center to the railroad. Crews building the Charlotte–Columbia–Augusta line encountered a flinty rise in 1852, called it Rock Hill, and established a depot around which businesses gathered. The city grew into York County’s largest municipality about twenty miles south of Charlotte’s center. Downtown also holds a nationally important civil-rights site. In 1961, nine Friendship College students arrested after a segregated lunch-counter sit-in at McCrory’s chose thirty-day jail sentences over paying fines. Their “Jail, No Bail” strategy spread through the movement. The former McCrory’s building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and included in the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Network.

Textile mills later occupied large pieces of the corridor between downtown and Winthrop University. Within Knowledge Park, the 400,000-square-foot former Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company mill has become The Thread, which received a 2025 adaptive-reuse award. Nearby, the 170,000-square-foot Rock Hill Sports & Event Center adds courts and event space within a mixed-use district connecting Winthrop with Old Town. Fountain Park provides a lawn and outdoor event venue a block from Main Street. Films and seasonal programs use the same space. In 2026, Old Town scheduled Saturday farmers markets from May through October and Food Truck Fridays from May through September, placing regular gatherings among downtown shops, civic buildings, and former mill property.

Winthrop adds a second long-running institution to the central corridor. Founded in Columbia in 1886 as a teacher-training school, it moved to Rock Hill in 1895. Its campus hosts concerts, theater, exhibitions, and public lectures as well as university classes. Scheduled transit changed sharply in 2026. My Ride’s fixed-route buses made their final runs on May 22 after fleet reliability and parts problems; the bus manufacturer’s bankruptcy made replacement parts difficult to obtain. York County Access began demand-response service on May 23, with local trips reserved in advance. The replacement service picks passengers up at their location and carries them directly to destinations within York County. The CATS 82X Rock Hill Express was discontinued July 1, ending the scheduled direct bus between downtown Rock Hill and uptown Charlotte. By August, the city’s public transit option centered on reservation-based trips within York County.

Along the Catawba River, recreation has developed around cycling and the water’s edge. The 3.35-mile paved Catawba River Trail connects Riverwalk with River Park, passing a river launch and joining the Carolina Thread Trail. Riverwalk also contains a 250-meter outdoor concrete velodrome built to Olympic standards and offers instruction for new riders. A nearby BMX Supercross track supports another branch of the city’s cycling program, while criterium and mountain-bike courses widen the mix. Local practice sessions and major competitions bring several cycling disciplines to one river district. The trail provides a continuous route beside the Catawba; the concrete oval and BMX track give the same waterfront two specialized sporting grounds.
