Green Castle, MO

Green Castle is an incorporated city in Sullivan County, northern Missouri, with a town name that carries a railroad-era spelling story. The town was surveyed on March 12, 1857, and Marion Sanders had already built the first permanent home on the site around 1853. Local place-name records say the town was named for Amos Green, a railroad official. When the railroad line was built about a mile away, residents were unhappy enough to call the town Castle, while the post office kept Green Castle and the station used Castle. That split naming history is still the best way to remember the place.

Green Castle's civic life filled in around the original town: a Methodist church was organized nearby in 1845, the post office and first general store arrived in 1857, and later came a grist mill, newspaper, creamery, and railroad depot. The city incorporated on August 8, 1881, giving the settlement a formal municipal frame as its rail and farm connections grew. Today it remains a small Sullivan County city surrounded by north-central Missouri countryside.
