About Greenacres

Greenacres began as Lawrence Carter Swain's answer to a housing gap in 1920s Palm Beach County. Coastal resort communities were booming, but Swain saw fewer options for middle-class households. After moving from Massachusetts, he assembled roughly 1,000 acres and divided the land into plats; Plat II, one-half mile west of Military Trail, became the original section of the city. The community incorporated as Greenacres City in 1926. Hurricanes in September 1926 and September 1928 virtually destroyed it, and its municipal charter was abolished in 1945 before the community reorganized that year and reincorporated in 1947. Residents later shortened the municipal name to Greenacres. The city counted 43,990 people in the 2020 census. Greenacres maintains 14 parks across its roughly six-square-mile inland footprint. Freedom Park combines a lighted soccer field, playground, exercise and jogging areas, pickleball, a StoryWalk, and a Little Free Library; Samuel J.

Ferreri Community Park adds racquetball, lighted tennis courts marked for pickleball, a multipurpose field, and another StoryWalk. The Community Center schedules classes and activities for children, adults, and older residents. In 2026, the city's calendar paired that programming with Sunday Sounds concerts and a Senior Health and Resource Fair. The Palm Beach County Library System's Greenacres Branch provides free computer access, in-building lending laptops, study rooms, a 50-seat meeting room, an eight-seat conference room, and a borrowable birding backpack. Its partnership information with Palm Tran also gives patrons a direct place to check local transit options. Together, the parks, community programs, and library put recreation, practical technology, and gathering space within a compact municipal footprint.
