Greenback, TN

Greenback is a Loudon County city in the foothills west of the Smokies, with 1,102 residents in the 2020 census. Its older story starts at Morganton Ferry, first known as Wear’s Ferry, where the Little Tennessee River made a useful crossing. By 1810 the settlement was being called Portville, and the Morganton name followed. The railroad changed the map again in the 1890s: a planned town first called Allegheny grew around the Knoxville Southern line, and the post office’s Greenback name eventually stuck. The L&N depot, completed in 1914, still stands and has been reused as a community events center.

The city runs along Tennessee 95 and Morganton Road, with U.S. 411 to the south, U.S. 321 to the north, and Baker Creek and the foothills spreading around the roads. Chilhowee Mountain and the Smokies show up in the southern view, while Knoxville and Maryville handle the bigger-city trips. Greenback’s present-day life gathers around the community center, city meetings, local churches, volunteer activity, and the depot’s second life. It is a small railroad-and-river city whose name changed with each new map, but whose location still does the same work: connecting the Little Tennessee valley to the roads over the ridge.
