Greene, ME

Greene is an Androscoggin County town whose central village is counted separately as the Greene census-designated place. The town took its name from Nathanael Greene and was incorporated in 1788, giving it a Revolutionary-era name and a long Maine timeline. One of the most distinctive buildings here is the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, a 1937 Tudor-style hall built as a free venue for entertainment and later listed on the National Register. Greene is part of Maine School Administrative District 52, alongside nearby Turner and Leeds. The local shorthand is an old village center, a school district spread across neighboring communities, and a memorial hall with a story of its own.
