Greenfield, IL

Greenfield is a Greene County city in eastern Illinois, founded in the 1830s as settlers gathered around fertile farm ground. The 2020 census counted 1,059 residents. Illinois Route 267 runs through town, leading north toward Jacksonville and south toward Medora, while Carrollton, the Greene County seat, is about 13 miles southwest. Greenfield’s small grid sits in a broad agricultural landscape where the surrounding roads matter as much as the city streets.

Greenfield Community Unit School District 10 serves students from portions of Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, and Morgan counties. The city’s school history reaches back to log-cabin classes, a free school opened in 1870, and a high-school tradition that produced its first graduating class in 1879. That long school connection gives Greenfield a shared center without making it a county seat. The city also has the familiar rhythms of grain trucks, school events, and county roads.
