Greenlawn is a relaxed North Shore hamlet that feels like a classic small town, centered around a lively stretch of Broadway near Pulaski Road. The area has a distinct downtown core where the train station, local delis, pizzerias, the firehouse, and the library all sit within a few blocks of each other. Born into slavery in Virginia, Ballton escaped during the Civil War, served in the Union Army, and settled in Greenlawn in 1873. He started as a tenant farmer before growing into a prominent agricultural agent and builder, earning the title "Pickle King" after producing roughly 1.5 million pickling cucumbers in a single season. Ballton went on to subdivide land and construct many historic homes near the railroad. Greenlawn celebrates this heritage every September at the annual Pickle Festival at John Gardiner Farm, drawing big crowds for farm tours, artisan craft booths, and local food.
