Greenup, KY

Greenup is the Greenup County seat, a Kentucky home-rule city at the confluence of the Little Sandy and Ohio Rivers. The 2020 census counted 1,095 residents. Robert Johnson laid out the settlement in 1803 and 1804, and the community first took the name Greenupsburg before becoming Greenup, honoring Christopher Greenup, Kentucky's third governor. The Ohio River forms the city's northeastern edge and the Kentucky-Ohio boundary runs through the river.

The county-seat role still gives Greenup a civic center. The historic Greenup County Courthouse stands on Main Street, with older churches and buildings nearby, while the Greenup County Public Library brings everyday services and activities to the downtown. The rivers shape more than the view: they define the city's location, its ties to the Huntington-Ashland region, and the way roads and neighborhoods gather along the south bank. Greenup is a small river city with government, library, and courthouse life concentrated close to the water. The water is never far from the town's civic center.
