About Greenville
Greenville sits on the northwest side of Indian Valley in Plumas County, a Sierra community whose history reaches back to the Maidu people who lived in the valley for centuries before English-speaking settlers arrived. Gold Rush settlement brought new buildings and businesses in the 1850s, and the town grew around roads, homes, a post office, and the services that held Indian Valley together. Plumas Unified School District serves the area, including Indian Valley Elementary and Greenville Junior/Senior High School.

On August 4, 2021, the Dixie Fire destroyed most of Greenville’s homes and commercial buildings, including much of its historic downtown. The loss changed the physical town, but the community’s story did not end at the fire line: residents, local organizations, and county planners have been working through debris removal, rebuilding, and the design of a downtown that can carry older patterns into the future. Greenville is still an Indian Valley place, with the Maidu story, mountain roads, school life, and the difficult work of returning a town to the map after catastrophe.
