Greenwich, NY

At the southern edge of the larger Town of Greenwich in Washington County, the Village of Greenwich follows the Batten Kill and its village street grid. The 2020 census counted 1,689 residents. The village sits partly in the neighboring Town of Easton, and the surrounding town includes ten named hamlets, so “Greenwich” can mean a compact historic center or a much broader rural landscape depending on the address.

Within the village, Main Street, Academy Street, Church Street, Salem Street, and Washington Square hold the older civic pattern. A self-guided historical tour starts at the Village Building on Academy Street, and the village’s NY Forward work is focused on the Route 29/Main Street corridor, including a project to rehabilitate 132 Main Street for commercial and event use. Village planning documents place the historic district along these streets, with many buildings dating from the nineteenth century. Those details make the center easy to picture: historic streets, a small cluster of civic buildings, and a main road carrying the village’s current business activity.

The Batten Kill also gives context to the town’s older pattern of work and settlement. Hamlets grew around dams and mills, East Greenwich became a factory area, and the 1895 Greenwich and Schuylerville Electric Railroad once carried trolleys toward the Capital District before floods ended service near Clarks Mills in 1928. The broader town also contains an Underground Railroad station and open farming country, yet the village remains the place where those histories meet Main Street. The village’s historical tour turns those layers into a short walk from Academy Street, keeping the history attached to actual streets and buildings. The Batten Kill remains the thread between the village and the outlying hamlets. From Main Street, the village streets give way to the larger town’s river, mill, and farm hamlets, all tied to the same watercourse.
