About Greenwood
Greenwood is a small McHenry County village incorporated in 1995, but its most telling local building is much older. The Old Greenwood School was built in 1859 from yellow Milwaukee brick, with one room upstairs for high school and another below for grades; classes continued there until 1948. McHenry County’s landmark records keep that school and the surrounding Greenwood Township story visible, even as the village sits inside the Chicago metropolitan map. Greenwood does not need a long list of landmarks—it has one especially good one, a two-room schoolhouse that still does most of the talking.
