About Gregory

Gregory is a western Gregory County city on U.S. 18 and South Dakota 47, between Burke and Dallas. Ponca Creek passes about two miles south, and the 2020 census counted 1,221 residents. The town was laid out in 1904, and its early civic story includes a public school, a purpose-built City Hall, and an opera-house company organized by local businessmen. Those details fit a town that grew around the first years of twentieth-century road and rail settlement. The Community Sunshine Club remains part of the local effort behind park improvements.

Today Gregory's city government covers water and sewer, public works, parks, library services, police, and fire protection. The city park has a ball diamond, tennis courts, playground equipment, and twin swimming pools; Gregory Buttes Observation Park overlooks the city and connects to the Yucca Trail, walking paths, and a disc-golf course. Gregory School District 26-4, the city park, and the Buttes give the community its clearest public landmarks, with U.S. 18 and South Dakota 47 tying them to the surrounding county.
