Grenloch, NJ

Grenloch is an unincorporated community and census-designated place inside Washington Township, Gloucester County. The 2020 census counted 863 residents. The name comes from the Scottish term for green lake, and the post office still gives the place a recognizable address even though township government handles the municipal framework. Grenloch sits in the South Jersey suburban landscape, but its local identity is more specific than a mailing label: a small community with its own firehouse, roads, and long memory.

The Grenloch Fire Company began in 1922 in the basement of the Grenloch Presbyterian Church. Its first apparatus was a converted commercial truck, and members used a locomotive wheel rim as a fire alarm—one of those wonderfully improvised details that tells you how volunteer infrastructure used to work. The company later built at Hurffville Grenloch Road and kept a substation on Greentree Road. Washington Township's school system and public services now surround the CDP, while the fire company remains the clearest local institution. Grenloch is not a separate borough, but it still has the feel of a place people can name, find, and rally around.
