Gresham is built around two distinct hubs, each with its own community flavor. Historic Downtown serves as the classic core, where Saturday mornings from spring through fall mean walking through the bustling farmers market on the Arts Plaza for local produce and fresh pastries. Over on the west side, Rockwood has grown around a bright central plaza and an international Market Hall filled with neighborhood food vendors, small shops, and essential community services. At the same time, the city actively supports independent entrepreneurs. You can find culinary startups launching out of shared commercial kitchens just down the road from major tech facilities, giving the area an appealing blend of corporate career paths and grassroots local businesses.

Long before modern neighborhoods developed, Indigenous Clackamas people lived along these waterways and fished Johnson Creek. In the 1850s, early settlers began farming what was originally called Powell's Valley, eventually adopting the name Gresham when the local post office opened in 1884. The arrival of an electric train line in 1903 quickly linked the rural town to Portland, establishing the east-to-west transit corridor that shaped development along Powell Boulevard and Stark Street for decades to come.

Today, TriMet's MAX Blue Line follows that same historic corridor, offering light rail service every fifteen minutes into East Portland, downtown, and the westside suburbs. Historic Downtown remains an active social center in its own right, hosting popular community gatherings like the annual summer Festival of the Arts, which fills the streets with regional craft vendors, live music, and outdoor dining. With reliable transit links and vibrant neighborhood centers, Gresham makes it easy to stay connected across the Portland metro area while enjoying a grounded community feel.
