Gretna, FL

Gretna got its start in the late 1890s as a timber and railroad outpost in Gadsden County. Over the years, it developed into a close-knit town shaped deeply by its African American roots, with local life centering around churches, schools, and family businesses in the north Florida farming belt. Main Street still runs directly along U.S. 90, giving the town an easy, straightforward layout that feels genuinely connected to rural Florida.

One of the most recognizable landmarks is the historic 1908 Gretna Schoolhouse, a local fixture that has served over the generations as a classroom, community center, clinic, and town hall. For newcomers, Gretna offers a quiet, easygoing pace just five miles from Quincy and roughly thirty minutes west of Tallahassee. It provides plenty of open space and small-town calm, all with a direct highway route to jobs, shopping, and healthcare in the capital area.
