Gridley, IL

Gridley is a McLean County village on Route 24, about 18 miles from Bloomington-Normal, with farm country and the interstate network shaping its regional connections. It was laid out in 1856 and named for Asahel Gridley, a Bloomington lawyer, merchant, banker, and friend of Abraham Lincoln. The village’s early business story was agricultural and commercial: stores, hotels, offices, churches, and an elevator grew around the town. After the Great Gridley Fire of 1901 destroyed the business district and six homes, residents rebuilt more than $100,000 of structures within six months. That recovery is still part of the way the village tells its own history.

Present-day Gridley’s local map is easy to read. Third Street City Park carries the original land gift connected to Asahel Gridley, and the village maintains three parks, a swimming pool, walking paths, courts, and a baseball diamond. The Gridley Telephone Museum on North Center Street keeps the rural communications story visible through equipment and memorabilia, with regular weekday hours and Saturday visits by appointment. Community events include a Christkindl Market, a Memorial Day breakfast parade, a Veterans’ Day memorial service, and seasonal farmers markets.
