Grifton, NC

Grifton is a town split by Contentnea Creek and the Lenoir-Pitt county line in eastern North Carolina. The 2020 census counted 2,448 residents. The creek flows southeast toward the Neuse River and serves as both a natural boundary and the thread through the town's history. Grifton began as Peter's Ferry in 1756 and later became Blount's Ford, names that remind you how much the early settlement depended on crossing the water. The Grifton Historical Museum and Indian Village holds exhibits on natural history, the Civil War, Tuscarora history, and John Lawson, while the annual Shad Festival brings a parade, music, food, art, and the famous Shad Toss to the streets.

John Lawson Legacy Days uses the museum and creek bank for demonstrations and living-history events. Grifton School serves through eighth grade, with Pitt County schools and Pitt Community College connecting the town to the wider region. The local scoop is a creek town where fishing, history, and county lines all show up in the same few blocks.
