Griggsville, IL

Griggsville is a Pike County city in western Illinois, with 1,097 residents in the 2020 census. Richard Griggs, Joshua Stanford, and Nathan W. Jones laid out the town in 1833, and the city incorporated in 1872. It sits between the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, with farm roads, prairie fields, and river bottoms giving the place its wider setting. The Griggsville Historic District preserves the older center, while Griggsville-Perry schools keep the town connected to nearby rural communities.

Griggsville’s signature local idea came from J.L. Wade, who turned an antenna factory into a birdhouse operation after noticing the town’s position on the purple martin migration route. The city now has more than 5,000 birdhouses, including a 562-apartment martin house built in 1962, and carries the Purple Martin Capital nickname. The Apple Festival, Western Illinois Fair, city parks, and school teams round out the calendar. Griggsville is an Illinois river-country town where a nineteenth-century grid, a birdhouse skyline, apples, and a strong local festival map all share the same address.
