Groton, VT

Groton is the primary village and a census-designated place in the town of Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont. The 2020 census counted 419 people in the CDP, within a town of 984. The village sits in the town's southeast corner along U.S. Route 302, with the Wells River running through and heading southeast toward the Connecticut River at Wells River. Route 302 leads about 10 miles to Wells River and 20 miles southwest to Barre.

Groton's broader town map is classic Northeast Kingdom country: 32,961 acres, 32 miles of roads, a six-mile Railroad Bed section of the Cross Vermont Rail Trail, and a village center organized around the Groton Free Public Library. The library expands programs in summer when seasonal residents swell the local scene, while the trail brings snowmobilers in winter and cyclists and walkers in warmer months. That gives the place two scales at once: a compact village beside the Wells River and a much larger rural town spreading over forest, roads, and trail corridors. Groton is easy to place by the river, but the local scoop is how much of the town's life runs through old rail lines and the library.
