Grove Hill, AL

Grove Hill is Clarke County's seat in southwest Alabama, where U.S. 43 and U.S. 84 cross the county's timber country. The county seat moved here in 1832 because the site was more central; the community went through names including Smithville and Macon before Grove Hill became official around 1850 and the town incorporated in 1929. Courthouse Square keeps county offices in the middle of downtown, while the Grove Hill Courthouse Square Historic District preserves the older center. The Clarke County Historical Museum occupies the Alston-Cobb House, with the Creagh Law Office and Mathews Cabin on the museum grounds; Pioneer Day brings demonstrations of older farm and craft work each October. Clarke County Schools operate Grove Hill Elementary, Wilson Hall Middle, and Clarke County High. Grove Hill is a county-seat town where courthouse, museum, timber, and the roads across southwest Alabama all meet.
