Gruver, TX

Gruver is a Hansford County city on State Highway 15 and the old Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railroad line, with wheat fields and ranch country stretching in every direction. The town grew after Joseph Hezkiah Gruver and his son Lawrence established a ranch nearby around 1907. By the 1920s Gruver was a wheat and small-grain center; a post office opened in 1927, the railroad arrived in 1929, and the city incorporated in 1930. That sequence gives Gruver a clear Panhandle rhythm: ranch, grain, rail, then town.

Gruver Independent School District operates the local schools, including Gruver High School, and keeps education at the center of the community's week. Hansford County's older county-seat story also runs through Gruver: Farwell, the first town, faded after losing the county-seat contest to Hansford, while Gruver became the place that held on. State Highway 15 sends travelers through the county, and the Borger Junior College District provides the broader higher-education connection. Gruver is small, but the landscape around it is expansive, so the school, grain economy, and road network do a lot of the organizing.
