Gurnee, IL

Interstate 94 bisects Gurnee, and its Grand Avenue interchange contains a large visitor district. Gurnee Mills, Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor, and Great Wolf Lodge occupy the same west-side corridor; in 2026, the village's visitor page reported 23 million visits annually. That regional role sits within a village of 30,706 residents in 2020, roughly 40 miles from Chicago and 50 miles from Milwaukee, with Waukegan immediately to the east. Rail helped form the earlier settlement: the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad arrived in 1873, the stop became Gurnee Station the next year, and the village incorporated in 1928. Away from the interchange, recreation is spread through residential parks and the Des Plaines River corridor. The Gurnee Park District's 2026 site lists 406 maintained acres, 28 park sites, 14 walking paths, two community centers, two fitness centers, and an outdoor aquatic center.

Its annual schedule covers more than 1,300 programs, from preschool and after-school care to athletics, theater, art, fitness, and swimming, plus more than 30 community events. Gurnee Days brings a parade, music, fireworks, a car show, and local tournaments to several sites in August 2026. Lake Carina Forest Preserve provides a less programmed option on 494 acres along the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway. A one-mile grass loop circles the former gravel-pit lake, where visitors can fish from shore or an accessible pier and launch canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and other small nonmotorized craft. A separate entrance beside Gowe Park reaches a river canoe launch, shoreline fishing, and the longer regional trail.
