Hackberry, LA

Hackberry is a Cameron Parish CDP on the west side of Calcasieu Lake, where Louisiana 27 runs from Sulphur south toward Holly Beach and the Gulf. Its history is inseparable from storms: Hurricanes Rita and Ike damaged the community badly, with Ike’s surge reaching far inland, and Hurricane Laura hit in 2020. That is the hard part of the map; the other part is water, marsh, and the road south to the beach. Hackberry High School serves the community, and the place remains part of the Lake Charles regional orbit. Hackberry is coastal Louisiana with a lake at the door and weather written into every local memory.
