About Hallettsville

Hallettsville's 1899 Lavaca County Courthouse stands on the square at the center of a town that has served as county seat since 1852. John Hallet established the first settlement in 1833, and German and Czech migration after the Civil War helped turn the community into an agricultural center. The 2020 census counted 2,731 residents. The Romanesque Revival courthouse, city hall in a 1917 former bank building, and nearby historical markers keep county government and local history visible in the same central blocks. Present-day community activity adds a distinctive game and festival calendar. Hallettsville is a center of Texas 42 dominoes, with the Texas Championship Domino Hall of Fame and recurring state tournaments.

The annual Kolache Festival uses the courthouse square and Knights of Columbus Park for a parade, 5K, food and craft vendors, and other events. A paved walking trail runs next to Hallettsville City Park. Farming, livestock, poultry processing, cotton marketing, county services, and small-town retail all meet around the courthouse district. The result is a county-seat town where Czech and German heritage, agriculture, and competitive domino culture remain visible in ordinary civic spaces.
