Hamer, SC

Hamer is an unincorporated Dillon County community and census-designated place on the South Carolina side of the North Carolina line. It first appeared as a CDP in the 2020 census, with 820 residents. Interstate 95, U.S. 301, and U.S. 501 run through the area, so Hamer’s public face is shaped by people passing through as much as by the homes and roads around them. The place is also home to Hamer Hall, a large late-Victorian residence built around 1890 and listed on the National Register in 1975.

Two roadside businesses give Hamer an outsized place in the region’s memory. South of the Border sits just before the state line, with its Pedro signs, lodging, food, fuel, shops, and attractions arranged for highway travelers. Blenheim Ginger Ale is bottled on the same grounds, carrying a South Carolina soft-drink tradition that dates to 1903. The bottling company still describes its production as small-town and family-run, while South of the Border continues to operate as a highway stop. Hamer is a small residential place whose jobs, traffic, and name recognition are tied to that unusual combination of historic house, roadside landmark, and local soda plant.
