Hamilton, MO

Hamilton grew with the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, but two later businesses gave the town its modern shape. James Cash Penney was born and raised here, and Jenny Doan's Missouri Star Quilt Co. built a quilting business through shops and repurposed downtown buildings. The town's railroad past and its newer sewing economy meet on the same streets.

The J.C. Penney Memorial Library and Museum, dedicated in 1976, doubles as a library, local meeting room, and record of the town's best-known son. His boyhood home was moved into Hamilton in 1988 and now sits on the former railroad depot site. The World's Largest Spool of Thread stands near the Missouri Quilt Museum, a playful marker of the quilting business. Hamilton R-II schools and the public library keep the town's daily institutions in view alongside the museums and shops. It is a town where a depot site, a memorial museum, and a fabric storefront can all tell different chapters of the same local history.
