Hampton, AR

Hampton is the Calhoun County seat in southern Arkansas, where the 2020 census counted 1,181 residents. The town has held that role since the county was created in 1850, and its name honors Colonel John R. Hampton. The first county court met in 1851, and Hampton's present courthouse, a 1909 brick building with a clock tower, still marks the civic center. U.S. Routes 278 and 167 cross east of the county's center, within the Camden micropolitan area.

Hampton School District provides the local K-12 connection, with students graduating from Hampton High School. County offices bring residents in from the surrounding pine and farm country, while the two highways carry traffic toward Camden, El Dorado, and the rest of south Arkansas. The town's history includes an 1851 courthouse, a replacement courthouse from 1909, and more than a century as the county's seat. Hampton is a courthouse-and-school town whose map makes the county's government visible at the meeting point of two U.S. routes.
