Hampton, VA

Living in Hampton means sharing everyday spaces with centuries of American history. At the tip of the peninsula, Fort Monroe stands guard over the Chesapeake Bay, where massive stone ramparts and beachfront trails are now open for weekend walks and cycling. The fort played a pivotal role during the Civil War as a haven for thousands of escaped enslaved people. Just across the water on the beautiful Hampton University campus, the historic Emancipation Oak still shades the riverbank. It was here that early classes were held for newly freed families and where the Emancipation Proclamation was first read in the South, giving the city deep cultural roots you can feel as you explore the grounds.

Beyond its historic coastline, Hampton has long been a powerhouse for science and aviation. NASA's Langley Research Center and Joint Base Langley-Eustis are two of the region's largest employers, supporting a large community of engineers, researchers, and service members. This is also the cradle of the American space program, where the Mercury Seven and Apollo moonwalkers trained. For newcomers and curious families, the Virginia Air & Space Science Center downtown puts that heritage on display with real spacecraft, hands-on flight simulators, and an IMAX theater right along the harbor.

The city is made up of several distinct waterfront neighborhoods, each with its own character. Downtown Hampton clusters city offices, marinas, and casual seafood spots along the river. Right next door is Phoebus, a walkable historic district centered on Mellen Street that feels like a classic small town, filled with craft taprooms, bakeries, antique shops, and neighborhood eateries. If you want sun and sand, Buckroe Beach stretches along the bay with calm surf, picnic spots, a long fishing pier, and plenty of open space for an easy morning run.

Local events and cultural spots give residents plenty to do on the weekends. The Hampton University Museum holds an incredible collection of African and Native American art, making it one of the area's standout cultural gems. Families often spend sunny afternoons at Air Power Park, an outdoor park where kids can walk right up to vintage fighter jets and rockets. Waterfront parks also host popular community traditions, from the lively Blackbeard Pirate Festival at Mill Point Park to Sunday evening summer concerts at Buckroe Beach, where neighbors pull up lawn chairs to enjoy live music by the bay.
