About Hancock

Hancock is a Stevens County city on Minnesota Highway 9 in west-central Minnesota. The town grew when Great Northern Railway extended its line here in 1871, and the rail corridor still shapes the grid of streets, fields, and grain-country roads. The surrounding landscape is broad and agricultural, while nearby Morris is the larger regional service center. The town’s name honors Joseph Woods Hancock, a county official.

Each July 4, Hancock holds its annual community celebration that has roots reaching back to the 1870s. Baseball, parades, dances, and fireworks fill the day, giving the calendar a long-running local tradition. Hancock Public Schools operate Hancock Elementary and Hancock High School, so school grounds and holiday events serve as shared meeting places. The town’s ballfield, school buildings, and main street all come into focus during the holiday. With Highway 9 through town and farms opening in every direction, Hancock remains a small Stevens County center with a strong summer date and railroad beginnings.
