Harbor Island, SC

Harbor Island is a small residential barrier island in South Carolina’s Sea Islands, 14 miles east of Beaufort. The residential portion was counted as a census-designated place with 209 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. 21 is the only vehicle route onto the island, crossing the chain between Saint Helena Island and Hunting Island. That single approach gives Harbor Island a clear physical relationship to the larger Beaufort coast, with upland concentrated toward the northeast and the surrounding waters defining access.

Until the 1930s, Harbor Island was uninhabited and used mainly as hunting grounds. The construction of U.S. 21 connected Saint Helena to Hunting Island, opening a road into a place that had previously been reached through the Sea Islands’ water-and-marsh geography. Later, The Fripp Company bought most of the land and developed a gated residential and resort community. Today the island’s story is visible in that sequence: old hunting ground, new road, planned homes, and a shoreline that remains central to how the place is occupied.
