Harleyville, SC

Harleyville is a Dorchester County town on U.S. Route 178, about seven miles from the highway's terminus at U.S. Route 78 and within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metro area. The town's name comes from the Harley family, but its most distinctive historic site is St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Camp Ground, a Black Methodist camp-meeting place established around 1880. The grounds include a tabernacle, circular ring road, tents, stores, and small service buildings.

St. Paul Camp Ground is used for one week each year, ending on the third Sunday in October, keeping a religious gathering tradition visible on the Dorchester County calendar. The annual gathering still returns each fall. Harleyville's everyday geography is more transportation-minded: U.S. 178 runs through town, South Carolina Highway 453 leads toward Interstate 26, and Orangeburg lies northwest. The camp ground adds a concentrated cultural landmark to that road network.
