About Summerville

Summerville began as Pineland Village in 1785, when Charleston-area plantation owners came to escape seasonal insects and swamp fever. It became an official town in 1847 and now extends from Dorchester County into small portions of Berkeley and Charleston counties. The town’s population was 50,915 in 2020. Since 1972, the Summerville Family YMCA has hosted the annual three-day Flowertown Festival as a fundraiser for its health-and-wellness programs. The Summerville Historic District, Old White Meeting House ruins and cemetery, and nearby Ashley River Road, Middleton Place, and Colonial Dorchester are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
